Street Prophet

Simon Kibunyi Ndung'u, STUDENT:(SCHOOL LIFE): Studied in Nakuru,St Gabriel Mission Secondary School in Lanet. He also went to Mount Kenya University, with a diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Simon is Well known as “The Street Prophet” is A High School Teacher And Also A Child Development Teacher In Malindi. Having such professions means you will have to meet people, learn different characters, preferences and how they take life. This is so diverse and it brings so much inspiration to my poetry pieces.

TYPE OF POEMS WRITTEN: Rhymed poetry, epics, narratives, lyric, ballads, soliloquy (monologue), Simon's place of birth is Nakuru. His life is his greatest motivation, what he has been through, his dreams, ambitions, failures and his imagination. People's lives also give him inspiration. He is an introvert, poetry has helped him to bring sensitive issues out into the masses.

Simon says challenges come when the audience don't understand or relate to your pieces, though personally he has had only one piece that he really struggled with, but he had to explain it for people to understand. As a performing poet, sometimes memorizing your piece becomes an issue, it's possible to but it takes time. Lastly, making a video for your pieces can be a challenge, so sometimes he end up doing a lyrical video, which is cheaper.

AWARDS: Simon Participated in 2014 International Essay/poetry Contest For Young People Certified by GOI Peace Foundation and UNESCO.

• One of my poems was published in Book Butchers, an online class.

• Winner of numerous poetry contests.

INSIDE SCHOOL LIFE: He loved writing a lot since he was in class, for, English was what he ate and lived. After doing his KCPE, he started writing. He now has a manuscript of a book length story, yet to be published. All of his English tutors were his best friends, in primary Mr. George from Michinda Primary School, Elburgon was his mentor. Then came Mr Kiratu who believed in him and pushed him towards his writing dreams. Then Mr Baraza topped it all up with his intensive knowledge on poetry.

OUTSIDE SCHOOL LIFE: After school, Simon took to writing. He has hundreds of follscaps of handwritten pieces, from 10yrs ago.

Simon's FUTURE PLANS: Aspirations to bring change to the world using poetry. So many issues have taken toil into our society, some are too sensitive to talk about, but using poetry can bring solutions to problems.

Simon's ADVICE TO POETS AND WRITERS WHO ARE GROWING IN THE INDUSTRY: Be diverse, let your mind wander. Do not just focus on love and passion. Life is full of adventure, talk about that. Read poetry, know what it entails and add your touch of creativity. No poet is the same as the other. Look for a mentor, my teachers were my mentors. Learn how to listen too and accept corrections.

PARTING SHOT: Poetry can be a lifesaver if you know what you are doing. So far Simon Kibunyi Ndung'u has over 200 audios of my pieces. Watch out for his YouTube channel, good things are coming.
